[[treasure]] hunt.

first picture that comes up when you search 'the dandy warhols come down' in google

i need more of these songs.
which songs, you ask?
songs that make seriously cool references to the bands i love.
reason for the dandy warhols cover?
their song from their album "The Dandy Warhols Come Down"
it's called "Cool As Kim Deal".
and who is kim deal?
the bassist for the Pixies, of course.
[[saves you a google search-up]]
and why have i only discovered it now, you're wondering? probably because while looking for my mother's birthday present today [[it's officially a painting, by yours truly, and i'll take a picture for you after it's dried [[it's oil paint, and her birthday's tomorrow, -insert worry here-]] but it's all nice and based on a red/pink/orange/white palette]] i took a spontaneous trip to the cd store, looked through the Dandy Warhols, found the song, almost squealed, slapped myself for not knowing previously, and subsequently posted it on my blog. [[now]]

*side note* see what i've done with the brackets in between brackets in the middle of a really long sentence? it's pay back for all the times i've gotten lost while attempting to read a passage like that.

another one i know of is a song by The Wombats, i'm pretty sure i've suggested in a previous 5-song playlist,
called "Let's Dance to Joy Division"
[[oh yes, it's here]] [[it's a 2 song playlist]]
Joy Division was my life for a few weeks some months back.

anyone know any seriously good ones?
oh, and preferably in the alternative/indie rock genre.
[[all that while sitting here wondering what i'm going on about, and hopefully noticing i'm finally starting use capitals]] [[hi-5 for random capitalisation]]

oh yes, that's the other thing. don't you find this really unattractive, yet somehow all these people find it cool?
hElLo. that's not random. there's a pattern.
ReNA is random. i think. [[haha, yes i am!]]
[[allow me to sit here and ramble, and laugh at ReNA, which i now realise has a double meaning]] [[i'm a genius]]
wow, a lot of self-conceited praise tonight.

toodles! [[that's the new sign off]]

[[i'm sorry about all the rambling, Where Is My Mind?]]
^that's your cue to listen to the song^
oh, and why on earth it is a Placebo version? well, it's a live Placebo version, and Frank Black is on stage, and it makes me cry watching it, wanting to be there oh so terribly badly. [[oh, and if you listen to Placebo singing it on an actual recording, don't. they killed it]]
[[and don't get me started about missing out on the Pixies while they toured in Sydney earlier on this year in march]]

got killed by ten million pounds of sludge.

crap, this photo is too cute for its own good

so you can probably figure out by the title this is not the "long awaited" outfit post.
in fact, this is going to be some kind of a rant. a vent, perhaps, and if you choose to read, then read on?
i'm annoyed. why?
because recently, i downloaded the free 4 track sampler for the Pixie's Doolittle 20th Anniversary Concert. [[clickety here to get to the website and do the same]]
and every time i listen to them live, i die a little inside.
why? because, in march this year, i missed out on their concert to australia. and i seriously, i kid you not, want to turn back time. i'm beyond frustrated and i just have to say:

i f*cking love the Pixies.
[[no matter how ironic it is that i missed their concert]]

so yes, this is going to turn into a 5-track-mix-post now.

1*gouge away-pixies
2*no cigar-millencolin
3*the headmaster ritual-the smiths
4*monkey gone to heaven-pixies

interview: The Frail Marys.

So recently I sent Brisbane-based band, The Frail Marys, a couple of questions regarding the band/their music, and here are there answers! Their music is raw, strong, and reminiscent of names such as Millencolin, the Pixies, and even Blink-182. I suppose I was impressed upon seeing the awesomest list of inspiration, so here you go...
1*How were The Frail Marys first conceived?
The Frail Marys were conceived when William (Liam), met James (Jamie) who was standing outside a yuppie den wearing a Dead Kennedys shirt, looking confused and completely like a fish out of water after being forced out of the venue by stern looks of disapproval due to his apparel. A conversation ensued about music and it was decided we should start playing together immediately. We were joined six months later by Tim on bass and rehearsed with a few desperados on drums and were predictably abandoned by them one by one until we found Kai to complete the line up. It has been bliss ever since.
2*How would you describe your work?
Our work is rather raw, disorganised, passionate, sincere, diverse garage music.
3*Where do you see The Frail Marys in 2-5 years time?
I see the Frail Marys hopefully supporting You Am I and touring non-stop on an independent label. Hopefully.
4*What kind of message do you want your music to convey?
That you don't have to wear spray on jeans, sport labyrinth inspired haircuts and incorporate 10 synths and 20 samplers into a group in order to get people to shake it.
5*Any other hobbies outside making music?
Knitting, cooking, fantasising, walking, reading etc.
6*Who/What are your influences?
We are mainly influenced by groups as diverse as the Pixies, the Saints, Scratch Acid, the Scientists, the Cruel Sea, Blur, ELO, The Smiths, Janes Addiction, Nirvana, Syd Barrett, You Am I, Pete Doherty, Dusty Springfield, Motown, the Velvet Underground, Jim Morrison's blatant disregard for his good looks and health.
7*When did you start playing your instruments?
I started playing guitar around 2004, Jamie started playing guitar around 2000, Tim started playing bass around 2007 and Kai has been playing drums since the womb.
8*How did you come up with the name of your band? I was raised an Irish Catholic and thought it was cheeky play on words. No sac religious intent by the way.
9*Our last interviewee, Denis, of Pensive Penguin, would like to ask…who is your favourite mythological character and why?
My personal favourite mythological creature would have to be the Siren (Seirenes) or Naiads who in Greek mythology would lure sailors and their ships into rocks by singing. It was said that if their calls were not heeded by the sailors, they would kill themselves out of shame.
10*Do you have a random question for the next band?
To the next interviewee, who would you rather see set on fire? Luke Perry, Jason Priestly, Brian Austin Green or Ian Ziering?
photos taken from their facebook page

i'm not even kidding you right now. if you're looking for some fresh sounds, and like me enjoy the artists listed above, i'm telling you right now: you will be impressed.
check them out here and tell me what you think.
how was everyone's week?
to tell you the truth, i'm on the brink of extreme exhaustion, and currently not even looking at anything fashion related. no, dearies, far far from that. at the moment i am...

looking at spongebob merchandise on ebay. what has my life become? but no, i do sincerely love spongebob.
have an awesome weekend, and i'll be posting something exciting/outfit-related saturday/sunday, depending on how my time goes.

the current want list.

thought i might just do a quick post on a few things i want from american apparel.
i'm in need of some basics that i can wear over anything/under anything. thoughts?
i'm dying for the skirt... chiffon, it's so pretty... i was considering making my own, as well.

not only those, but i've also been considering a Pixies Doolittle record/Pink Floyd record for some time now. maybe even both. i need pocket money! perhaps i should get a job?

art camp!

hey guys,

so unfortunately i don't have any photos at the moment! shame. but the scenery here is beautiful. we've been doing some funky things, 4 hour bus ride listening to the pixies, radiohead, the killers, arctic monkeys, and crazy tunes from the 70's.
so just to give you guys a little update [[no, i'm not dead!]] we're playing with my friends' glowstick. hopefully it doesn't break and go spasticated everywhere. the bulb photography is amazing! we just had some awesome fun rolling on the ground laughing at the success of our first photo! wish us luck (:

seriously, take it off.

this is probably old news, but today i saw a picture of kesha plastered up by the school radio room, wearing a death to the pixies shirt. so, instead of being angry right then and there [[which i was, anyway]], i decided to leave myself a mental note to look further into it.
turns out she also cropped it into a tank. does this mean i can't wear my death to the pixies shirt without making some connotation of trying to be kesha-esque? turns out while visiting a little beach not far from where i live, it's not actually little, it's bondi beach, and it was in march, kesha managed to come up with the atrocity of wearing an obviously customised pixies shirt [[which i don't really mind]] over some dreadful swimwear.
and truthfully, it's not that at all. it's the fact that kesha's music takes absolutely no stylistic influences whatsoever from the pixies. so whether she actually listens to them or not, it wouldn't matter, because she's currently scarring the world with the music she makes. [[this is solely subjective, please take no offence, i know she's pretty famous at the moment]]
yes, i'm a die hard alternative fan. honestly, if i see her wearing a radiohead tee shirt, or nirvana, or floyd, i will be seriously, seriously annoyed. confronting pictures, no? not a very pretty sight... you don't say. i wish wish wish a wave of mutilation came by to wash her away, or even that a monkey could take her to heaven. anything. and yes, i agree, what was ironic, has now become seriously literal.

new music. [and 2 weeks down the road]

hey guys. so today marks the 2 weeks since i've restarted my blog. and it's doing well! thankyou for your support.
over the past two days i've acquired some amazing music.
something old, something borrowed and something new. how amazingly inspirational is the pixies album art? it makes my head swirls with ideas.

old: found infinity on high, fall out boy. at times i still enjoy rocking out to them, it brings back memories from when i first got the cd a few years ago. it has some crazy cool album cover.

borrowed: best of oasis from whatmore. [[oscar]]. one day, i hope to be able to play every part in wonderwall.

new: bought radiohead:  pablo honey + pixies: surfer rosa and come on pilgrim, + radiohead: ok computer [[from whatmore]]. updated band linkies, guys.

xx rena. how's everyone's week coming along? nicely?
